Genius, stone and fire: blacksmiths from Togo

Togo, West Africa. Some villages still resist globalization. Its inhabitants forged iron since the dawn of time with hammers and anvils of stone.

I went to meet blacksmiths from Togo with Fleur Daugey, a scientific journalist and naturalist. Of strong ethnographic interest, this subject is also of an aesthetic and iconographic point of view. Here are some pictures that I hope will attract your attention.

Welcome to the heart of an Africa that succeeds in preserving its ancestral craftsmanship of blacksmithing. Here, iron is forged with stones, a technique that requires exceptional physical strength and mastery to create products that are sought both locally and beyond the borders.

In the heart of the Kabyè mountains of Togo, the huts ring from the sounds of stone on iron from sunrise to sunset

Unique and very old, this craft is still alive and well. The forge does not survive as an attraction for tourists—on the contrary! The manufacture and sale of hoes supports an economic activity with flourishing health. Witness the market of Tcharé where traders negotiate wholesale hoes to resell them throughout the country and even in neighboring Benin. These traditional tools all carry the claw of the blacksmith who shaped them, a guarantee of quality.
